Hello, 2018! Bye-Bye-Bye, 2017. ⏱️ “Auld lang syne” to habits (you’re going to UPGRADE) with a fresh start of a new year. But, according to science, your New Year’s resolution ideas will fail if you make this 1 mistake.
So, here’s the thing. You can actually make a “resolution” at ANY time during the year (wink)… but we tend to go BIG on January 1. New year, new motivation. And, not to get too personal, but how many times have your resolutions actually made it to the finish line? I mean, I get it.
Want to know WHY your resolution (not you) is failing? Science explains it.
🚨 #1 Problem Ahead…
#Science: Yes – your resolution is impressive. But, the #1 problem is that the goal might not be measurable. Your resolution can’t be a general idea or mindset. The goal itself needs to be something that you can check on with numbers.
- Vague Goals: “Losing weight” or “eathing healthy” or “exercising”… will probably fail.
- Too general.
- How do you determine progress each day/week/month with a general goal?
- If you can’t determine your progress, how can you improve?
- How can you make positive changes?
- How will you make it work? You probably won’t.
💡 How to “Make It Work” with Science…
Change how you see & set your goals and resolutions. All you need to do is tweak your resolution so that you can monitor your specific progress.
- Real Goals: You’ll find success with your resolution if you can track and measure it with REAL data.
- For example…
- No iPhone/Tech use 30 minutes before bedtime
- On a chart write the last time you check your phone/laptop…then next to that time record when you go to bed.
- Drink 64 ounce of water/day
- Record your ounces in a journal or in THIS iDrated app.
- Walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes/3 times a week
- Or workout for “30 minutes a day” and get inspired with THIS Move App.
- Spend 45 minutes/2 times a week reading a book (of your choice…not connected to work)
- Try 1 DIY from Pinterest once/month
- Sleep in 45 extra minutes 1 day/month
- No iPhone/Tech use 30 minutes before bedtime

Thank you so much! I’m sure it will be and it’s going to be so much better! I really appreciate you sharing this with friends! Thank you!
This actually totally makes sense; actual numbers make you more accountable, and give you something to keep a record of. I’ve changed one of my resolutions this year from ‘go running more often’ to ‘run 10 miles each week’ to try to make the goal more realistic.
That’s really a better way to put our resolutions so that we can achieve them better. Love how you modified yours!
Great tips. I am bad about vague goals which is why I am bad at making them happen. I am keeping this post for future reference.
Thanks! I hope this post helps you set better goals this year!
I generally know I will not keep my resolutions so I don’t make any. I sometimes think around my birthday in August to turn over new leaves. I like a lot of your ideas and maybe pick one or two to follow.
That’s exactly how I felt before but then I realized that maybe I wasn’t making realistic resolutions that I could follow. I hope you give it another chance and that my tips will help you with the new ones!
Girl, you are spot on…or I guess science it. I have always had super vague goals and I know that is why NONE of them have ever gone anywhere. Time to fix that!
Haha, thanks! I hope this post helped! It’s really good to set goals that we can achieve!
It has never served me well to make vague goals. I try to write down what I want to accomplish, do some online research, and then determine what I need to do. It’s worked in the past for me!
Vague goals are never good for anyone. I think that’s a lovely idea. It’s good to find what works best for you.
YES! It is all about measurable goals for me. In fact I create new ones every season – every month – every day. I am all about checking off a list and keeping myself accountable! GREAT tips here!
On a side note.. That SCIENCE GIF is amazing!
That’s a lovely thing to do! Making goals regularly will definitely help you become more productive! Thanks for dropping by!
This is bang on! I was just talking about this to my friend the other day. Saying how we shoot for the stars and often our resolutions fall flat and don’t come to fruition. Measurable goals is the way to go. Happy New Year
Thank you! That’s so true, I completely agree with you on that one! Hope you make better goals this year! Happy New Year!
These are great tips. I just feel like a year is a LONG time to keep a goal. We need to be reasonable!
Thanks so much! That’s so true! I agree with you on that one.
Yes! Goals need to be SMART! That means: Specific, measurable, accountable, realistic and timely. I stopped making resolutions at New Years. Like you said, goals can be set ANYTIME!
That’s all so true! Love that abbreviation! That’s right, anytime! Thanks for the visit!
Thank you so much for including some goal ideas!! Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.
You’re very much welcome! It’s good to have a guide so you know what you want and how to start.
I don’t even make resolutions anymore. I did make a few ‘goals’ last year and I really make my mind up to do it I can.
It’s nice to have a few goals here and there that you can achieve throughout the year or the week, or month. Thanks for the visit!
These are some great tips. I found myself always failing at my resolutions too. I now make goals and they are always small goals – goals I know I can achieve. I hope your 2018 is full of great things!
Thanks! It’s really all about making better goals this year. I love that idea! I hope you have a lovely New Year as well!
I typically do not make resolutions because of all the reasons you listed. However, I am loving your unique resolution ideas. They’re perfect for growing!
I hope this year will be different for you! And I’m glad to help out too, here’s to hoping we all have a great year ahead!
I like your list! Nothing is too hard, but everything makes an impact. I will be sharing this cutie! The science makes sense, since scientists like their data.
Thank you! That’s the whole point, these tips are not impossible at all to do. That would be awesome, thanks! Science definitely makes sense!
I love goals that are realistic and measurable. It is good to have set numbers and criteria.
That’s the kind of goals we all need to set! Definitely!

I need to turn off the electronics 30 mins before bed. Great idea. I need to be more measurable about my business goals too.
That’s definitely a must for all of us so we can fall asleep easier! Thanks! I hope my tips help you with the goal-setting!
Great advice. Coming from a previous career in the finance world, I’m use to having measurable things in my life. Everything had to be quantified. Kinda just rolled over into my personal life.
Thanks! That’s really the way to go with the goals that we set to make sure we achieve them! Love that you’re so used to it.
I am SO bad with NY Resolutions. I’ve found that making “goals” works much better for me because I always slack and then fail hahaha.

I guess you could say that it’s not really for everyone but it does make the year interesting! I hope my tips help you the next time you decide to make goals or resolutions!
These are some really great tips to hold yourself accountable for your new goals. I have actually decided to pick a word and forgo the goals
Thank you! A word for the year is a great way to keep you on the right path. Love that idea as well.
Tracking and measuring your progress with real data is a great idea. I think actually holding yourself accountable will make a big difference in helping all of us attain those goals.
Yes, totally. That’s such a good move because it keeps you on track of your goals.
This all sounds so much better explained like this! I didn’t make a resolution but want to make some healthy changes this year. Getting electronics out of bedrooms at night is a great start for our family.
Thank you. I love healthy changes, it’s definitely a smart choice. I hope some of my ideas help. Gadgets out of the bedroom at night is really going to improve your sleeping habits.
This is one of the reasons why I stopped making resolutions for a new year. While these resolutions are usually well-intentioned, they’re most likely destined to fail. Instead, I strive on making small goals throughout the year.
Goals and resolutions sort of go hand in hand. I like making small goals throughout the year as well. I think that’s perfect for helping us improve ourselves.
