Yes, at my age I am still taking classes. Learning more. Trying out new things. Not sure why sometimes we think that learning STOPS after formal education… but if you look, there are classes offered all around you in stores and community colleges and online!
Today’s challenge: Sewing 101.
Spotting a class schedule flyer at my local JoAnn Fabric store one day, I took it home with me. Hmmm… interesting.
Something CLICKED while reading the “Sewing 101” class summary. So I signed up. Bought the supplies, got to the store on an early Saturday morning and started the learning!
“Sewing 101” taught how to get started with a sewing machine – and I have to say that I feel pretty cool throwing down terms like “seam allowance” or “pedal foot” with confidence. What?… these are pretty common words, y’all.
My fabulous husband said these magic words; “Get what you need to start this FOR REAL…” so I loaded up my cart with the sewing essentials!
After spending HOURS (and HOURS!) at JoAnns for the class, then finding necessary materials… I finally arrived home and DOVE right into doing MORE sewing!
I couldn’t stop.
Pinterest = AMAZING site for patterns, tips and tricks. Yep, created a new board, “SEW Fabulous” and am loading it with inspiration!
What do you think of my first products? A finished scarf (with fringe!) for my supportive husband, a cute coin purse (to practice doing lining and fleece interfacing), a fabric tray and an infinity scarf for myself.
I’m obsessed.with.sewing.
Moral of the story – NEVER stop learning. Growing. Discovering. You just don’t know what new passion of yours lies right around the corner.
I didn’t know Joann’s even taught classes, much less sewing!! I have a sewing machine, but can pretty much only do a straight line (soooo…basically, NOT much!). I’m like you…I love to take classes and I’m constantly on the hunt for a good class. I like the challenge, I like learning something new, and I like meeting other like-minded people! I’m definitely popping into my local Joann’s to check on a sewing class! Thanks for sharing and GREAT job on your various projects!!! Can’t wait to see what else you make :).
I totally stumbled upon the JoAnns classes by chance… but it was so fabulous! Love the challenge and the new creative outlet for me! 🙂 Onto making an cutey apron now. From a pattern! … wish me luck!
This is so awesome! I used to do so much sewing but it was because my mother wanted me to. It would be nice to get back in to it for ME! Love the idea of making your own scarf 🙂 Can’t wait to see what else you create!!!
